Seek First the Kingdom of God

“But seek first the kingdom of God and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you.”
—Matthew 6:33

Life can become very busy. We have deadlines at work. We have mouths to feed at home. We have homework to do at schools. And if we have children, then you can add recreational activities to that list as well. If we’re not careful, however, we can allow the busyness of life to overshadow what is far more important, the kingdom of God and our place in it. God knows all of our needs, He knows what we have to do at work, what we have to do at home, what we have to do at school, as well as the needs of our own children. Never at any moment does God tell us to forsake our responsibilities. But He does tell us not to worry, He will provide for our every need (Matt. 6:30). The lilies of the field are dressed in splendor, and the birds of the air always find their food, how much more will God then take care of us? (Matt. 6:26-29). But there will be times when we will be tested. Times when work will want to creep in and take over what little time we have already given to the kingdom. Times when school will want to demand your full attention, over what you have already given to the kingdom. Times when the matters of the home threaten to swallow up your life, leaving you little to no time for the kingdom. In these times God asks, “Who is your God?” To what, or to who, are you giving what belongs to the Lord? In what are you placing your faith in? What is occupying the place that is God’s alone? We will all be tested, and the way we live our lives, the decisions we make at work, at home, at school, etc., will reflect just how much we love Jesus, and how that compares to how much we love everything else. Jesus said “But seek first the kingdom of God, and his righteousness, and all these things will be added to you” (Mat. 6:33). Are you seeking first the kingdom of God?
